P.S. I Love You

When I approached the idea of watching this movie I was a little hesitant. Losing a spouse is a sore subject with me because it's one of my greatest fears. Who really wants to lose their spouse? But this movie looked really good so I chanced it. My first impressions were that I don't think I like Hillary Swank very much, especially in a chick flick. But as the movie progressed I was more impressed with her character and her as an actress. Next, it took me a while to realize, but the guy who is her husband, Gerard Butler, is the same guy who plays in The Phantom of the Opera as the Phantom. Although I thought he could've sang better in The Phantom of the Opera, his raspy voice suited his character in this movie. General synopsis of the movie: Holly (Swank) is married and loses her husband. The movie is her journey to move on with her life with a little help from her husband. His death wasn't a sudden one so he plans out a series of letters for her. Her mother, who is played by Kathy Bates (who I just love) doesn't agree with this, she thinks it makes her not move on with her life. Holly also has a series of friends that help her in different ways, also played by great actors/actresses. That's about it in a nutshell without telling you the whole story and divulging the end. Watch the trailer.

Our review: The first time I watched it, I watched it alone. Bo had gone to bed, so I stayed up to watch the sappy chick flick by myself. I teared up a lot at different moments, but that's not saying much - I cry at commercials; but the end did make me actually cry. When it ended and I went to bed, Bo asked "So, did you like it?" and I really didn't know how I felt. I didn't know if I hated it because as I have previously mentioned, I hate when one of the main characters dies especially when it's someone who is supposed to be completely in love. But I also didn't know if I loved it because it was an exceptional movie. I re watched it the next day with Bo and didn't cry and decided that I did really like it, and we do plan on owning it. Bo really liked it as well, but his only comment was that everyone handles death in different ways, especially comparing men and women. He said he could see himself going through some of the things she did and feeling some of the things she did, but other emotions and actions he thought were just her over playing her mourning. It didn't have that typical ending where she find true love again, and Bo appreciated that. He felt that if she would've had that happen it would've made the movie too cliché.

Catch Up

Okay, it's been a while since I last posted here, I'm a little behind. I have tons of movies to post about, we have been watching them, but I haven't been reviewing them. I'm not sure whether or not I really want to review them. I'm not getting much feed back from this site so I'm going to post the list of which ones we've watched and you can tell me which ones you want reviewed. Or even if you just want our opinion of a movie that you have already seen. Sound good?

Okay here is our whopper of a list:

P.S. I Love You

27 Dresses

Game Plan

Gray Matters

Licence to Wed

The last Mimzy

In the Land of Women

Enchanted

The Seeker

Happily Never After

Doogal

Horton Hears a Who

Alvin and the Chipmunks

Driving Lessons (We watched this one because it had Ron from Harry Potter in it)

Juno

Lars and the Real Girl

Blind Dating

I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry

I'm Reed Fish

Legend of the Water Horse

Sweet Nothing in my Ear (Hallmark movie, but it was really good)

Casanova (R rated, but I saw the USA version that was edited)

Bo has a few to review - These are the ones either I didn't watch or don't really want to review because they are "guy" movies... Not that I have anything against guy movies, but he's better at getting the point across because he's a guy... Nevermind...

Sweeny Todd

3:10 to Yuma

I am Legend

The Pianist

The Bourne Ultimatum

So let me know what you think. No worries if none of them interest you.

Sydney White

Sydney White was a movie that we rented a couple months ago but I wanted to review it anyway. I didn't make the connection before we watched the movie that it was a rendition of Snow White; "duh!" you're probably saying, but I guess I missed that. Back to my previous confession of really liking Amanda Bynes, that was the reason I wanted to watch it. Bo hadn't even heard of it before we watched it. Our rating: We would own it. It was cutesie, and had quite a few funny parts in it. Even Bo really liked it, the seven nerds make the movie. I wasn't too excited to hear that it was about a sorority, call me crazy but, BORING! But the humor that the nerds bring make it funny. It was fun to watch and try to figure out which guy was which of the seven dwarfs. First we had to see if we could name them all. It's harder than you think... Anyway, if you are looking for a light, funny semi-chick flick, this is a good one.

August Rush

Because August Rush was put out by the same company as Nancy Drew our video store didn't stock this one either, good thing for pay-per-view. We rented it about a week ago and our rating: We LOVED it! We thought it was one of the best movies we've seen in a really long time. Freddie Highmore, the boy, is such a good little actor. He was in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland. As I've mentioned previously, I like a story to just be wrapped up in a nice little bow with the ending; this movie could've had a more detailed ending, but the ending it had worked. Johnathan Rhys Meyers actually sings quite a few songs in the movie which is always impressive for an actor to sing instead of having a double. The music in it is fantastic; a nice blend of rock/pop and classical. We are also suckers for a movie with Robin Williams in it, he also does a great job in the movie. Anyway, we highly suggest watching it, we've already bought it!

Dan In Real Life

I had heard really good things about Dan In Real Life and so I was excited to see it. Bo, on the other hand, was not interested in seeing it. But since I was the one to go to the movie store, he really didn't have a choice. The night we watched, Boo was on a rampage! She was everywhere, in your face, running around, screaming, and anything else that a wild 2-year old does. So, needless to say, it made the movie-viewing experience... a bit unpleasant. And I wouldn't mind too much, but we are always in a crunch to watch the movies so Bo can get to bed at a decent hour. Bo was a good sport and actually sat down and watched it with me, he did leave the room during the middle because he was about to throttle our daughter because she was so crazy. You'd have thought that she had drank a whole case of coke by the way she was acting. So, with a lot of stopping and starting, rewinding and subtitles we finally got through it. Our rating: I really liked it. I was a bit irritated at some of the part in the movie because the main character gets dumped on and it wasn't deserved. One of the teenage daughters drove me crazy, but it added to the movies plot well, so I dealt with it. Bo was in such a mood with the irritation of the wild 2-year old, that he had a heightened anxiety with the movie. He always gets nervous/anxious when the characters or the movie get "uncomfortable". By this I mean, like when nothing can go right for the person and you just feel so sorry for them. These type of movies always make Bo crazy, he usually wants to just stop the movie or do something else. But he usually grins and bares it because I want to watch the movie. By the end of Dan In Real Life he actually liked the movie because it did have a good ending. I do think we would own it because I really liked it. Bo commented that he like the music in, and that always makes him like a movie better.

Bee Movie

I was really excited to see that Bee Movie was coming out onto DVD! We didn't dare try the movie theater with Boo just to see it. She loses attention very quickly and I would've hated to buy a ticket just to miss it being out in the halls with her. As for our rating of the movie: It was okay, I mean, it was good. It wasn't at all what we expected... Both Bo and I were a little thrown off because we thought it was going to be super funny, and it wasn't really. We had the same thoughts about Shrek the Third; it was more of a serious movie than it was funny. This one had some funny parts in it, but it was just too serious. Bo even went as far to say that it's a little bit of an environmental movie. We do think that we would own, Boo really liked it, well at least as much as she sat and watched. It was good, just really not what we expected. We really want to watch it again, just to see if we like it better the second time around. This is really sounding like we didn't like it, but really we did, it just caught us off guard with our expectations. I think our expectations were high because of Jerry Seinfeld, he is so funny that we thought it would just ooze out in this movie, but he was rather mild. Again, we really need to watch it over.

Nancy Drew

We had been wanting to see Nancy Drew for a while and it finally came out on DVD this last Tuesday. So, I got there on Tuesday morning so that I could get the good new movies, picked up a few and headed to the "N" section to get this one and it wasn't there. So I went to the front and asked the cashier about it. Come to find out, they weren't going to get it in, I guess the company the puts the movie out raised their prices and so the movie place wasn't going to order it. I was so bummed, we had been waiting for it to come out for about a month! So I get home and tell Bo what happened, very disappointed like, and he said to me in that tone of voice that lets you know you are a complete idiot "So? We can't just get it on Pay-Per-View." Oh yeah... Right... The movies on Pay-Per-View are the same price, if not a couple cents cheaper than renting at the movie store. Long story short, we did get to "rent" it.

As for the review: We would totally own it. It was cute, it was clean and was moderately funny. Well, as for it being funny, it was; but most of the funny lines were in the previews. I hate it when a movie does that! I mean, sure put a couple of the catchy ones, but not ALL of them! It's got a cute little love story and Nancy Drew is so... cute, you just can't help but like her. All in all, even with the funny lines being exploited, we really liked it.
