Sydney White

Sydney White was a movie that we rented a couple months ago but I wanted to review it anyway. I didn't make the connection before we watched the movie that it was a rendition of Snow White; "duh!" you're probably saying, but I guess I missed that. Back to my previous confession of really liking Amanda Bynes, that was the reason I wanted to watch it. Bo hadn't even heard of it before we watched it. Our rating: We would own it. It was cutesie, and had quite a few funny parts in it. Even Bo really liked it, the seven nerds make the movie. I wasn't too excited to hear that it was about a sorority, call me crazy but, BORING! But the humor that the nerds bring make it funny. It was fun to watch and try to figure out which guy was which of the seven dwarfs. First we had to see if we could name them all. It's harder than you think... Anyway, if you are looking for a light, funny semi-chick flick, this is a good one.

August Rush

Because August Rush was put out by the same company as Nancy Drew our video store didn't stock this one either, good thing for pay-per-view. We rented it about a week ago and our rating: We LOVED it! We thought it was one of the best movies we've seen in a really long time. Freddie Highmore, the boy, is such a good little actor. He was in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Finding Neverland. As I've mentioned previously, I like a story to just be wrapped up in a nice little bow with the ending; this movie could've had a more detailed ending, but the ending it had worked. Johnathan Rhys Meyers actually sings quite a few songs in the movie which is always impressive for an actor to sing instead of having a double. The music in it is fantastic; a nice blend of rock/pop and classical. We are also suckers for a movie with Robin Williams in it, he also does a great job in the movie. Anyway, we highly suggest watching it, we've already bought it!

Dan In Real Life

I had heard really good things about Dan In Real Life and so I was excited to see it. Bo, on the other hand, was not interested in seeing it. But since I was the one to go to the movie store, he really didn't have a choice. The night we watched, Boo was on a rampage! She was everywhere, in your face, running around, screaming, and anything else that a wild 2-year old does. So, needless to say, it made the movie-viewing experience... a bit unpleasant. And I wouldn't mind too much, but we are always in a crunch to watch the movies so Bo can get to bed at a decent hour. Bo was a good sport and actually sat down and watched it with me, he did leave the room during the middle because he was about to throttle our daughter because she was so crazy. You'd have thought that she had drank a whole case of coke by the way she was acting. So, with a lot of stopping and starting, rewinding and subtitles we finally got through it. Our rating: I really liked it. I was a bit irritated at some of the part in the movie because the main character gets dumped on and it wasn't deserved. One of the teenage daughters drove me crazy, but it added to the movies plot well, so I dealt with it. Bo was in such a mood with the irritation of the wild 2-year old, that he had a heightened anxiety with the movie. He always gets nervous/anxious when the characters or the movie get "uncomfortable". By this I mean, like when nothing can go right for the person and you just feel so sorry for them. These type of movies always make Bo crazy, he usually wants to just stop the movie or do something else. But he usually grins and bares it because I want to watch the movie. By the end of Dan In Real Life he actually liked the movie because it did have a good ending. I do think we would own it because I really liked it. Bo commented that he like the music in, and that always makes him like a movie better.

Bee Movie

I was really excited to see that Bee Movie was coming out onto DVD! We didn't dare try the movie theater with Boo just to see it. She loses attention very quickly and I would've hated to buy a ticket just to miss it being out in the halls with her. As for our rating of the movie: It was okay, I mean, it was good. It wasn't at all what we expected... Both Bo and I were a little thrown off because we thought it was going to be super funny, and it wasn't really. We had the same thoughts about Shrek the Third; it was more of a serious movie than it was funny. This one had some funny parts in it, but it was just too serious. Bo even went as far to say that it's a little bit of an environmental movie. We do think that we would own, Boo really liked it, well at least as much as she sat and watched. It was good, just really not what we expected. We really want to watch it again, just to see if we like it better the second time around. This is really sounding like we didn't like it, but really we did, it just caught us off guard with our expectations. I think our expectations were high because of Jerry Seinfeld, he is so funny that we thought it would just ooze out in this movie, but he was rather mild. Again, we really need to watch it over.

Nancy Drew

We had been wanting to see Nancy Drew for a while and it finally came out on DVD this last Tuesday. So, I got there on Tuesday morning so that I could get the good new movies, picked up a few and headed to the "N" section to get this one and it wasn't there. So I went to the front and asked the cashier about it. Come to find out, they weren't going to get it in, I guess the company the puts the movie out raised their prices and so the movie place wasn't going to order it. I was so bummed, we had been waiting for it to come out for about a month! So I get home and tell Bo what happened, very disappointed like, and he said to me in that tone of voice that lets you know you are a complete idiot "So? We can't just get it on Pay-Per-View." Oh yeah... Right... The movies on Pay-Per-View are the same price, if not a couple cents cheaper than renting at the movie store. Long story short, we did get to "rent" it.

As for the review: We would totally own it. It was cute, it was clean and was moderately funny. Well, as for it being funny, it was; but most of the funny lines were in the previews. I hate it when a movie does that! I mean, sure put a couple of the catchy ones, but not ALL of them! It's got a cute little love story and Nancy Drew is so... cute, you just can't help but like her. All in all, even with the funny lines being exploited, we really liked it.

And the Movies Roll On

Since living in Willcox we have rented quite a few movies, and don't remember which ones we have seen. So maybe I'll remember them as people ask. My sister requested a movie review so I thought I would oblige. She asked if we had seen the movie Hairspray. We had really been interested in seeing this one and finally rented it a month or so ago. A friend of mine had asked if I had seen it previous to watching it, and she said "It's one of those movies that you either love it or hate it." So we took a chance on it, because I mean, who wouldn't watch to see John Travolta in a dress?! It also interested us because it had quite the cast; lots of really good actors/actresses. So to the rating, we give it: We really liked it, and would most likely own it. It could've had a better ending because it just kind of ends, no real resolution; I like a movie that really wraps things us, but even so it was still okay. It is definitely a musical, they sing a lot. If you like a musical, with a great cast, it's really worth seeing. But, hey it's just our opinion... We do agree that, you will either love it or hate it, so I'm interested in what people have to say.
Personally, I also liked it because I really like Amanda Bynes. Now, that you all are laughing at me, I really enjoy some of the stuff she is in. I'm totally a fan of her series What I Like About You, although it's just re-runs. She's just so goofy it makes her funny. I also appreciate that she hit star-dom and kept it together. A couple actresses out there (that we will leave nameless, but you all know them) that get famous and then go down the crapper, just really disappoint.

A Night at the Movies

Movie review time again. We have actually only watched one movie since I last reviewed, but I remembered and was reminded of two more we have recently watched. Last night we watched No Reservations. I really, really enjoyed it. I enjoyed all the actors/actresses in it. Bo commented last night that it was a little strange to see Catherine Zeta-Jones in such a caring, serious role but he also liked the movie. She is usually spunky and portrays a spoiled brat very well. I also enjoy Aaron Eckhart too, I don't really like him in a villain role such as he was in the movie Paycheck. For those who didn't know, he's LDS and that's impressive to see such a prominent LDS actor. I have also always like the little girl in it, she has grown up a lot since we first saw her in Signs. Anyway, back to the movie if you are in the mood for a good chick flick with a good story line I would totally recommend this one. Our rating: We would and probably will own this one. I would re-watch it any day!
The next one that I was reminded that we had watched and had forgotten was Stardust. And I'm really surprised I did forget it because we loved it. It's kind of a movie for everyone. It has comedy, sci-fi, a love story, fighting, and a really great cast. I won't list each individually, but a few, Charlie Cox (Tristan) did very well in it, and I think it was one of his first movies. He was also very cute, so it made it easy to watch him and his cuteness. The other one I also enjoyed was Robert Di Nero, he played a very different part than you usually see him in. Anyway, the movie had a good story line, a very cute love story, and was adventurous enough to entertain my husband. Our rating: We plan on buying it, although we have it recorded on our DVR right now. As a side note, my mom thought it was a weird movie but she did like it, and my sister liked it better the second time she watched it, so it might need to be a movie you watch more than once.
And lastly, we watched Becoming Jane. This one I have mixed emotions about. I really did like the movie, although I had to watch it with subtitles to even understand what they were saying. I won't give away the end, but I didn't like the way it ended. I know it's based on her life, so it ended like it happened, but it was sad. If you like the movies that she wrote; Pride & Prejudice and such, you will probably like the movie. Anne Hathaway is a favorite of ours, we watch most of the movies she is in, so we had to see it. Our rating: It was worth watching once, but we don't think that we would own it.
You are probably thinking that we only watch chick flicks, but that's all that has been out lately. Not that I'm not a sucker for a good chick flick but Bo needs the change from them. I am fortunate to have a husband that will watch and usually enjoy a good chick flick, but he needs action movies too. We have been disappointed in the selection of movies out lately. Our other problem is that we don't ever go to the theater. We have one in Willcox but we would much rather sit at home on our new comfy couches than go to a theater. A lot of the movies we see we would rather wait to see them on video, the theater has gotten so expensive that we are choosy about the ones we go see. Hopefully we will have something other than a chick flick to rate soon!

Movie Reviews

I've decided that I am going to merge one of our passions with my blog. We love movies. We watch them all the time, so why not blog about them. So, consider us critics, but don't take our opinion for the truth, it's just our opinion.
We have been renting a lot of movies lately; that darn writers strike! The good shows haven't been on so we had to find something to watch because without the good shows, there is nothing on TV. Last night we watch Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. We have "ratings" of movies but they aren't what you would expect them to be. The rating we gave this one was: We need to watch it again to make a definite opinion. It's one of those movies that kind of ended abruptly, so I was taken by surprise. Dustin Hoffman was amazing in it, and I enjoyed the dynamics of the movie but like I said, the ending threw me off. Up until the end, I really enjoyed it. It's very imaginative, and kids would probably really enjoy it. Our highest rating we would give a movie is if we would own the movie, and this is possible keeper but combined with the need to re-watch it the jury is still out.
The next three movies are ones we watched a couple weeks ago but I hadn't thought to write about them. There were more that we watched but these are the only ones I can remember. First, Martian Child. I read on a random blog the other day that that person hated the movie and thought it was stupid. Us, on the other had give it a rating of: It was good/okay, worth watching once but we probably wouldn't own it. I really like John Cusack as well and his sister Joan which are both in the movie. I thought it would funnier, but actually a pretty serious movie. Not what I expected, but it still okay and I'm glad I watched it.
Next, we watched the Nanny Diaries. This one gets a rating of: We might own it. It was cute and had some funny parts in it, but I wasn't completely sold on buying it. I have liked the stuff that Scarlett Johansson has done and she did good in this movie. The moral of the story was different that I thought it was going to be. We thought it was going to be one of those movies that makes you feel so sorry for the main character because they get tortured; those type of movies always make Bo uncomfortable and almost nervous. But Nanny Diaries wasn't like that, it was almost a drama with quite a few funny parts in it. It had a great ending and that's what makes me want to own it, but it's at least worth seeing if you like a good chic movie.
The last movie that we watched was Across the Universe. I actually didn't watch the whole movie, so our review is from Bo. He agreed with Zane, it had great music and he would want to buy the soundtrack but Bo thought it had no story line at all. It was like a collection of peoples experiences all rolled into one. He thought it was a good depiction of the times, but not really put together well.
So anyway, there you go. We probably have different movie tastes than you do, but we like what we like. Expect to see more, we rent movies quite a lot. But hey, it's only our opinion!
